I'm with Timet too, yeah I think its a myth about inferior Ti used to make them, problem is they crack... often, and I don't know if this is down to the Plasma Arc welding/manufacturing process. Just the machining on the dropouts and welding does look a lot cleaner on my DBR Axis TT, it's also lighter. Anyhow lets leave the Dyna Torus debate alone, any other lightweights out there?
 
My 95' Marin Team Titanium frame in 17.5" Marin size (more like 18.5" really) is 1500 gr. My lightest steel frame is a '94 Breezer Lightning, in 19" it weighs 1725 gr. Sorry, I've just bought an unknown NOS italian steel one (V-brake version) about of 1600 gr weight (18" size though) :facepalm:

I tend to keep the similarly sized steel frames of mine which weigh under 2.0 kg in my stock as long as possible, they just don't make them anymore and they're certainly worth preserving for future enthusiasts :xmas-wink:

Thats what I heard too, they had a high failure rate. Not casting aspersions on Russian/USSR made goods either as I have a Russian light Microscope which i have loved for many years and which is now seeing use with my kid. :D

my beloved 94' explosif in 18 is about 1800gr, my dean and hei hei from tst are both around 1500gr
but the lightest is my old 1993 3.0 c-dale in alloy can who weight about 1250gr :LOL:

Haha certainly not on my part, allsorts in my fleet and I'll be the first the say that my experience of light bikes are that they don't ride particularly nice, I'm also getting on for 14 stone and when I actually ride them as they should be ridden then stuff starts to brake. One of my lightest bikes I ever build/rode was a modern all rigid carbon 29er, sent a few PBs on trails on it, however it was horrible to ride, everything was aching and I couldn't feel my hands!

My stats show that light bikes make for very fast rides (even rigid over full sus), however they are not enjoyable to ride.

I must dig out the Kona Kula frame I have, it's a '99 model but supposedly weighs in at 3.3lbs, which is 1496g? (probably based on the smallest size frame though :roll:).

I think a Cannondale M2.8 frame is almost as good and better in some ways. The longevity of Aluminium appeals to me. The bike that was the biggest surprise to me and feels very light. I have never weighed the frame, It is a Sunn Xircuit made of Tange 2b tubing. (similar to Tange Champion). A really light bike that was let down by the finish. It makes a stumpjumper or similar feel pretty heavy. I have one begging for restoration.
Specialised S was supposed to be light but they did do it in a size 14" !
They all have Character. I have a Cannondale that is like new but a Marin worth half the value is actually nicer at my age.
It changes when I get to a Hill. Then I want something light. The Gary Fisher stuff from this era seems interchangeable and sometimes very cheap.
Well made but badly painted. Perfect for a Resto.
