Great site with lots of great ridesa and parts to take me doen memory lane.
I got into mountain biking in the 90s after going on an introductary course with the YHA. This was riding an old ridgid Emmelle but it really got me into cross country.
I sold the touring bike and went and brought a Hoo Koo E Koo that had just arrived in the UK. The one with the chainstay U brake that clogged with mud and a yellow stem with a wheel on it. Loved and totally wrecked that bike!
As I live in London most of the bikes Ive had have only been in my hands for only 12 months or so. This has included a Specialised rockhopper, Saracen (cant remember)and a Kona fire mountain, on one Pompino.
Nothing top end but all steel framed, canti/ v brake rigid bikes. I love thin tubes and fat tyres and lust after somehthing that rides well but is also practical for every day use.
With this in mind and the Pompino getting nicked, I recently pulled a tatty 93/94 Pine Mountain frame/ forks/ red stem out of a skip and put some parts on it:
onza titanium bars
Kally seatpost
XT hollotech II chainset with DMR ring
XTR rear hub and sunn rim
melvin singulator and single speed cog
Parallax front wheel
Red DX V brakes
bar ends and saddle etc
Looks ok for London use and dispite never rating Marins very highly it rides surprisingly well.
Hope to get some bits from the forum and maybe upgrade at some point to something a bit more sexy.
