It was a great bike and was such great value. Was £399 and had a deore group with XT brakes. That was Exage territory that year.
It was so strong (for srtrong - read heavy i suppose) too. Rode it straight into my friends '93 Cinder Cone some years later and ripped the Race Lite frame in two (was doing 50mph on the road decent) and the Trekker was unscathed bar a few scratches.

I'm not a true Retro person as I'd rather my bikes worked than were kept as was back in the dark ages Very few of my own parts from that era survived due to my usage of them.
To that end my Retro 1995 Kona Explosif has XTR V-brakes on it... I must do some pics as it's very lovely in a battered and bruised kind of way

1999 Specialised Rockhopper - blue and cream - the first with 7spd and without the U-Brake - sadly I sold this to buy...
1991 Trek 8900 Black splatter paint Bonded aluminium frame - my crime was to fit a Flexstem and Brahma Bars!!!. Bent the dropout, this bike was stolen… sadly… NOT! Insurance bought...
1992 Rocky Mountain Blizzard - The all white Columbus O.R. tubed one with green graphics and black Tange Struts rigid forks (I still have the Syncros Stem in use on my Kona Explosif). The bottom bracket was/became very ovalised on this frame and after a while the bottom bracket would not stay in. Warranty #1. On the replacement frame one of the brake bosses was so squint that the brake arm hit the frame, and almost from day one I again had problems with the bottom bracket. Eventually I got Warranty#2, although I had to pay an upcharge to the "better" 93 frame as no more 92's were available.
93 Rocky Mountain Blizzard - True Temper Black and White with Black Ritchey Logic Forks - Frame cracked at the brazed junction of the seatstays to seattube - Warranty#3, the frame was rebrazed and repainted but I sold it due to loss of confidence (new owner was aware of story).
1995 - Trek Pro Issue 9900 Nude Carbon Fibre OCLV Frame. Within a month I snapped off a brake boss, it was clear to me that the brake boss was not properly bonded to the frame. Warranty #1. After 6 months with the second frame the bottom bracket insert became unbonded. Warranty#2, Trek gave me money back saying "Perhaps this is not the bike for you". Shame, as to this day it is still the best hardtail frame I have ever ridden.
1995 (Late) - Kona Explosif with prototype 1996 Paint - complete bike with Project 2 forks. This bike got an amazing hammering and despite putting a huge dent in the top tube two weeks after buying it I was unable to any damage to this frame until 1996 when the dropout snapped. I still use this frame as my singlespeed after getting Charlie at Alves cycles to fit track ends. I was unwilling to get it painted beacause it's unusual and I am tight so the dropouts have been painted with Hammerite - real hardcore :roll:
1997 Intense Uzzi SL - Broke the seatmast after 3 months. Broke the seatstays in 2001. Replaced the shock a few times but this bike is still able to go although it was retired from active duty in 2004
1999 Trek 8900 Aluminium - one of the first hardtail frames I could get with a disk mount - Hayes Chainstay mount admitedly. The geometry is the same as my much loved OCLV frame but the Aluminium means the ride is not as good. Trek where made aware of the OCLV story and were happy to sell me this frame (which I haven't managed to break despite my best efforts).
I'm enjoying the site - who knows - I may even get the bug... :x

Been avoiding this thread like the plague....
Been riding bikes since legs went round in circles. Rode a Muddy Fox Courier Comp back in the day (purple and white paint job). Then bought a Marin Eldridge Grade in December 1990. Over the years bits fell off and were replaced with shiny spangly bits such as Onza HO cantis, original DX spds, XT groupset, USE inline seatpost and bars with integral; bar ends. A Paul's Fireballs seatbinder bolt. Sold it 4 years ago, its current owner has killed the DX Sti and the rear wheel Heathen! This was joined by a shocking pink Courier Comp for commuting. This had to live in the bedroom of our small flat so was quickly sold as it clashed with the wallpaper.
The sale of the Marin helped HM Inspector of Taxes fund a Pace Rc200 f8 with RC38s, XTR groupset, Hope Ti mono wheels, USE seatpost and bars (with integral barends), Middleburn RS7 cranks, Time carbon atacs. In fact the whole thing bears a remarkable resemblance to Mint's Pace with only one exception - the sheep's bike was green and only PRETEND. Mine is grey and real.
The Pace has been joined by a Cougar roadbike with Ultegra 10 speed. I ride it to work up and down Chunal in the Peak District - this would make me hard and whippet fast if it weren't for my weakness. Beer.
In my day job I'm a special needs teacher, and when the weather is foul I drag folk off Kinder - I'm a member of the local Mountain Rescue team too.
Somehow I managed to fit four kids in as well. And I'm not forty yet!

I'm new to this forum. I live in New York and I'm a sales rep for a bike parts distributor. I've owned vintage mountain bikes before they were vintage. My current MTB is a modern Fisher full-suspension, but I'm looking to simplify, get rid of it and get a Fat Chance. I'm from Boston, so I'd like a Massachusetts bike.
I also collect old LeMond stuff, as I was a big fan. I just posted my road bike on the classic road bike section. I'm in the process of acquiring a unique LeMond MTB. If anyone knows about these bikes please drop me a line. Here's the picture that I have so far. I'll take my own and post it once I receive it.

Evening retro fans! I started riding again this summer after a 10 year sabatical from MTb. I used to ride a Specialised Rockhopper 89 and then progressed through several Diamond Back Axis including a Team with 21speed XT STI kit (when newly launched) and some early Manitous up front - i used to race NC XC and DH under the guise of Mad Cow Racing and we once featured in MBUK. Stopped riding when some local scum broke into my garage and stole all my kit. Nowadays they'd have got an ASBO! Anyway back on a bike now - a Klein Pulse Comp and loving it. Even thinking about racing BSX next year as I'm so close to Chicksands.
Looking forward to reminiscing about White Onzas, Purple cranks and the great pasta/beer parties at Malvern Classics!

Hi guys,my name is Oliver,44years of age,started back in '89
First bike was a SPECIALIZED-STUMPJUMPER with full SHIMANO XT,that I
rode for 2 years.Great machine,that brings me lot's of fun in hobby races.
We are a group of 10-15 people and rode 2-3 times a week for training.
One day a friend show us his new bike,whow,never saw a better thing in my life,it was a FAT YO Eddy!!Two weeks later I mobilized all my money to buy my first custom made frame,a Yo!!Completely build up by myself.
Since that time FAT's are my obsession!!! Years and thousands of miles later I became a collector,WICKED,TI,MONSTER and last but maybe not least a 10th ANNIVERSARY. Sorry,but I only choose the old MASSACHUSSETTS ones,because the spirit of the old Fat crew lives in there!! The newer ones maybe look like FAT CHANCE,but they build in the halls of SEROTTA and the quality isn't as good as the old ones,sorry but that's my opinion.That's it with my little story,wish all of you a good ride!!
