I have a DX rear hub (circa 1991) and the freehub is slipping under heavy load. I have removed, cleaned and lubricated it but it still slips. :(

It is 7 speed and the hub is marked Shimano Deore DX FH-M650.

Shimano (Madison) are unable to offer a direct replacement (no suprise really).

Can anyone help, or know of an alternative that might fit instead?

I would like to try and keep the wheels going as they are the originals off my first Orange Aluminium O, are in excellent condition otherwise, and look great on my latest O.

Thanks.

Have a read here.

Depends what you have already. Middle ring can bolt on with outer ring using longer bolts and assuming the spider has inner ring attachment holes then you'll just need inner ring bolts and possibly spacers too. Make sense?!?!
makes perfect sense I should have been more specific I need to fit the inner ring which apparently needs spacers and longer bolts ? anyone got any ?

any shimano 7 spd freehub should work.

I'm inclined to agree. I got a replacement for my 1992 LX freehub from SJS Cycles a few weeks ago. Fitted no problem.

Jockey Wheel Seal

Oh, and while I'm here...

Anyone got a spare seal from the top jockey wheel on a DX (or similar) rear mech ?

No, my thumbie has not exploded, but I am looking for an exploded diagram of a Shimano right hand side/ rear mech thumbie, XT or Deore, either, they are essentially the same.

An alternative would be a link to somewhere were there are repair/ reassembly instructions.

Problem sorted, I got another set, this time the Deore variety, much cheaper and these ones don't have the problems the XT ones had. The plan was to change over the XT bits, but thinking about it, the XT bases are already on my bike, so they can stay there, but am going to mount the Deore shifters as Deore shifters, the silver tops are much more pleasing to the eye.

The shifter that is in bits, well, that is going to be my Japanese puzzle for bored moments, I will sort it out when the pressure is not on to use the thing.
