Liking that a huge amount, extremely finished. I'd just just clear coat it.

That's what I said about the first one!!!!!!

i sort of agree, the mtb had stainless parts, so that tends to suggest not painting them, i really like the copper plating options that Tom gave me although i know the effort that went into the finish, his hands were raw after all the polishing etc. the problem with the metal finishes though is that they won't last as long as paint. the mtb still looks good but effectively it only has one layer of paint, the lacquer, this means that there is less protection on the tubing.

with the new bike the head lug isn't stainless, but the frame will need a finish and the issue with lacquer is that it has no primer which means it doesn't stick aswel so is more prone to chipping, and once chipped it'll rust so it does need a finish of some kind.

i'm leaning towards pearl white with black and/or red highlights

:D

Re:

Red highlights will definitely make it faster! ;)

The head tube and lugs IMHO, are calling for some contrast colour to pick out their detail, but I'm guessing the work and time involved to achieve that maybe cost prohibitive.

I'm seeing it also in a lighter colour overall and has got me wondering what software/app's are available to check different colours using a photo of the bike (in the same way that some manufacturers offer on their bike build sites), Photoshop for example?

Size wise and geometry too, from what I can tell from the pics, sounds like it would fit me perfectly! :D

Re:

the demon mtb had predominantly silver parts, with this one i wanted dark/black parts so that suggests lighter colours, i have always liked pearl white, it think it's a classy finish on any bike, i showed Tom 2 samples of pearl white on frames i have and he liked the look, the lugs etc will definitely be picked out in someway.

Re:

no, this one is mostly columbus tubing i believe, initially it was going to be 853 but Tom found some tubing that he thought would be better for this build, Columbus do a specific downtube etc for 29ers that was lighter than what reynolds did so it made sense to go down that route.

Re: the beginning of Demon number 2

It's interesting , aspects of this build are exactly what I had in mind for my build, though my original idea has morphed into some thing completely different. Now I've had some more inspiration to make it even more unusual. But as ever Jon, the build looks top quality , look forward to seeing how it ends up, I would find it hard to paint it after it has been made bespoke for you.

Re:

yeah this changed from the original idea quite alot but i think that's the good thing about a custom build, the time it takes for the builder to get the space in his calendar to build your bike gives you the time to decide exactly what it needs to be.

when i went to Tom to talk a second build it started out as a road bike! i was being sort of silly, i wanted a matching road bike to the mtb, the idea was to have just a road frame/fork and swap across parts from my condor to build it. (there were genuine reasons for wanting it though, mainly that it would replace my current modern road bike frame which would have been sold, all my other road bikes have 1" head tubes, and therefore 1"carbon forks which on my yearly trip to the alps doesn't sit well with me for descending as they flex like hell!)

but then i thought, i have 4 road bikes and i ignore them in favour of the mtb's. then i thought, well what about a cross bike with a flat bar, but then that is a hybrid surely? and i didn't like the sound of that, a bit old mannish?

so then i started thinking, well what do i actually want, need?

i certainly didn't need another mtb so what would this be used for? answer, i ride around the area quite alot just for errands, in and out of southampton (16miles both ways) and the roads are crap, the bike lanes are even worse, so it came down to a few things:-

mtb style handle bar set up.
good brakes
700c/29er
good width slick tyres

those were the main things i wanted, the bike grew from there naturally.

also, i might use this in the alps instead of a road bike, when i went to watch the tour last year on alpe d'huez i chose to ride the Demon mtb both times i climbed the mountain as i felt spinning up on the mtb would be faster/easier/more comfortable than struggling on the road bike as i had on the col de Joux plane a few days before. so there is logic in this build for me, basically a tough as hell road blasting 29er mtb.

and here is the video of the road descent from the top of Alpe d'Huez 3 days before the Tour climbed it last year, 16mins of pure fun! :D :D

make sure you click the HD option, looks loads better

Re:

So it's a shopping trolley...? :p

Have to say I'm not a fan of white bikes, but that's just personal and it ain't my bike! If you do go with white, my thoughts would be to go gentle on picking out the lugs, nothing too dark.

Any more pics yet? :D

Re:

got some parts pics! :D the bike is now stripped down, Tom has it back at his workshop, the cables are going internal which was the main thing that Tom didn't get time to do before the show, then it's off to paint, we discussed ways to pick out the lugs, i had a suggestion and Tom liked it so that looks like it's being done ;)

so here's some parts pics, the wheels are H+Son rims, hope front hub and alfine 11 rear, the tyres are Maxxis Grifter tyres, 29x2" almost slick-ish, they are also potentially the only set in the UK as apparently they are not available here, Don Walker (aka "the Don" or "DeeDub") the organiser and president of NAHBS got them for Tom for me when we had tyre choice issues (i currently have 3 sets of tyres but these were the best)

anyway, enough waffling, pics!

Re:

ok, finally i can update the thread. :D

it's at the painters, i've seen a pic, not posting it yet though as that's for Tom at Demon or Ali at Fatcreations to do, for those that don't know, Ali at Fatcreations is the painter for most of the UK's top builders, having painted 5 winners at the recent bespoked bristol show.

it's looking epic, can't wait toy build it! :D
