The 80s called. They want their car back (Mercedes content)

Re: The 80s called. They want their car back (Mercedes conte

The 80s was the last time Mercedes knew how to make an attractive car. The 90s ones are ugly and break too much and the 2000s ones are the same with sharper edges on.

That said mine would be a W123.

I had a 1983 500SEC AMG and a 1987 560SEC. Loved them both. Plus I had the SEL versions, a 500 and 560. Apparently Jody Scheckter rated them.

Gearing on the 1983 model meant a healthy 30mpg from a 5l V8. The 560 was 6.9 seconds to 60 for a large car.

No barges either - its shorter than the current Mondeo - the back seats unclip and weigh about 3 - 4 kg over my crappy Fiat which has back seats at an absurd 25kg!

There was a lot of new technology and firsts for these cars that is commonplace today. First production car with airbags, traction control, ABS etc. Their multi-link suspension is now commonplace. Own one and you'll realize that they are completely different to anything else and can still be compared to many modern cars.

Their weakness is rust which is a shame as the rest is very easy to repair and everything is still available from Mercedes (at a price of course).

I knew you were a fan LGF, but I didn't realise your ownership history was so .... comprehensive!

The blue 560 is an absolute beauty.

My white one isn't showroom. Someone seemingly had a disagreement with the aesthetics of the front bumper, but it puts a smile on your face every time you get in it. I suspect the seat-belt butler alone could have some pretty impressive clothing-removing powers (I shall have to check with Dr K, natch).
