The previous owner had Welded metal mud guards on, for some reason unknown to me... So the Cougar has been getting a lot of hard graft put in to try and restore it

Indeed. The top end (Chorus) ones in good or better condition go for £50-70 a pair on ebay.

I have two pairs and they both look great and work well enough not to change.
