Tell me about: Columbus Genius Nivacrom tubing

Nivacrom was Columbus' top grade of steel.

Genius was an extra lightened version, optimised for TIG welding.

It's very nice - but so thin that a dent will possibly write off your frame. Have seen a couple of insurance cases on Genius road frames that had stuff fall on top of them - an the results weren't pretty.

I'll be carefull. A speaker fell on a brand new Kinesis Max-light frame - I was so surprised when the insurers covered it.

I presume you've looked on the Columbus website. Doesn't say much though, just that Genius came out in 1991 and was the predecessor of Cyber (1994). Both of them are forms of their classic Nivacrom alloy (Agency_Scum's Kona is made out of Cyber and I believe he approves). I don't know whether one was more expensive than the other.

I should have thought that the frame weight would be the best guide to the gauge of the tubes in your particular frame, as there would have been a variety of tube sizes available. It's certainly a high quality tubeset, presumably heat-treated, and the one you've found seems to be in good condition.

Weight is 1982g

its a 19" frame and comes in under the Saracen 17" I've just stripped

Found it - thanks. You catalogue shows a slightly later model but is close enough.

A Pace, Yo or Pro FRO frame only sat between 2500-3000 guilders back than. A Zaskar was 1500.
