It’s from 2012 @Woz so no touchscreen but one of my friends suggested a usb keyboard.

It’s not a membrane as such @novocaine more like tiny individual rubber nipples under the center of each key... I sat at the dining table with the key not working, removed it with surgical tweezers, pressed the nipple with the tweezers and it worked, removed the old hinge, replaced it, clicked the new key into place and it’s worked ever since.. it was really clean under there.. any debris would have been visible between the point it didn’t work and the point that it did..

I can shake it for nowt tho so I’ll give it a whirl.

Perhaps available via Accessibility options like in Windows?

you'll find in the settings under Accessibility then Keyboard

Iirc death itself was more pleasant than the onscreen mouse operated keyboard

I know. the pad under the key acts as a membrane, it only needs a small bit of smut to stop it making contact.
as you say, cost's nothing to do it. I'd be tempted to give it a blast of air, you never know.
