Syncros Powerlite crown

A question for you - if you had just the crown, how would you have a new steerer pressed into it? Do you have the kit to do this yourself?

Re:

I have a friend who has access to a hydraulic press. But I’ve found the crown. No longer looking.

Feck! I've had a post up and running on RB or about 5 years now. Where did you uncover the crown?

Re:

Found a Cnc machinist who generated two for me. He might be interested in making a third.

Ok - cool... that's worth considering potentially.

So you've effectively had the Syncros crown copied by the machinist? How did they come out and look? What did you do about the steerer for the newly made crowns? Do you have some pics of the results?

Re:

they're not in my hands just yet. I gotta email the guy and see what's up. Saw some pics of the early work. They looked identical to the original crowns.

Right, ok - that sounds interesting!

How will the steerer work in your new crowns? An opportunity to dump the "interference press fit" of the original (which may not be a bad thing, as I still can't find a single framebuilder or cycle "expert" over here in the UK that can manage to press out a steerer, and then press in a new one, without completing fecking it up) - everyone, apart from one, has declined to even go near it!

I've tried Splitty on here a couple of years ago, but I simply received a box of bits back and the brand new custom steerer, that had been made for me by Chas Roberts' chief framebuilder - Winston, crumpled and squished into unusable crap, and I was back where I started, having lost a fair chunk of money on the utter incompetence.

Line things up in a hydraulic press. Heat the crown. Cool the steerer. Press. Beyond that, it beats me. But it certainly isn't a job for the uninitiated.

I asked my friend. His shop is swamped with work but if you can wait until March, he might be able to build one at that point.

Exactly - that's roughly what I had expected. I can't find a single framebuilder / cycle engineer / expert here in the UK that would want to touch it with a bargepole!

I've had a thread on here for a crown swap for about 5 years now. I think I can't a few more months!

What's it costing you to have these crowns made?
