Syncros Bottom Bracket - the right tool for the job?

Putting it out there for the experts to laugh at - I mean confirm ...
Are the Titec, Syncros and Tune AC38 BBs the same pin size and diameter?

Is the Tune W2 BB tool the answer?

Yeah as you do need them tightened properly. The bearing unit is easier to instal when the BB is cleaned up, threads are cleaned and its greased. I have a direct fit tool but you can also use the Park tool at a push to set it up right.

I found info on the Tune W2 tool - it has a 29.5 BCD - but no mention of the pin diameter.

The Hope tool appears to have the same BCD - but the pins are 3.5mm.
The Titec and Syncros BBs that I have - look to have the same BCD and a pin diameter of 2.5mm.

I'd be very interested to see/know the dimensions on your direct fit tool, please nicely.

To clarify/correct what I said above - the Syncros BB looks to have holes that will accept a 2.5mm hex key - therefore hole diameter is 2.9mm
The Titec BB hole won't take a 2.5mm hex - and will take a 2mm hex.

Just spoken to Cliff at Royce - the Royce BB tool is a BCD of 29mm with a 2.8mm pin.
Has anyone tried/know if this works on a Syncros?

I meant to reply to this earlier, but getting photos is a hassle.

I used this tool to put in my Syncros bottom bracket. I'm not sure of the brand of the tool, but someone might recognise it. It's heavy! I bought it for a couple of quid on Ebay many years ago.





I recently used it to remove a late 80s Shimano adjustable cup too. Neither of those are the bottom bracket I originally bought it for though, so I'll try to remember which others I have used it with, to give an idea of compatibility.

I guess it's something it's useful to own one of. If you were closer, I'd offer you the use of this one, but in the unlikely event you can't find one I could post it to you to borrow.

That looks like the Hope tool I have - pins look chunky. Can you measure them please?

Hope BB holes just take a 3mm hex key - so that's a 3.5mm hole.

Pins appear to be 3mm, as accurately as I can measure.

To remove and fit Royce BB’s which are similar I made a tool using a cheap angle grinder disc removal pin spanner from tool station for a few quid. Works well

If you either chase the frame BB threads to make sure they are clean cut and or clean them out with an old toothbrush and degreaser to remove any swarf, the Syncros BB should be installable with just ‘hand power’ only. Set the chain line correctly and just tighten the lock rings. These are precision bit of kit and doing it this way prevents over tightening. Im a stickler for frames and components being easy to fit properly without huge leverage on them grinding them up in the process.

Bit of a tangent/noob question here re: this Syncros BB:

Is there a drive side and a non-drive side for this BB?
I can see that the lock rings are colour coded (gold and black), but which side is which?

Does anyone know where I might be able to find a PDF of the official manual that originally went along with this BB? (much like this one for the Rev Crank set: https://www.retrobike.co.uk/gallery2/d/57702-1/Syncros+Steel+Cranks+Manual.pdf)
