If I shop in your store I don't expect to have to serve myself.

I refuse to use them.....Tescos et al make enough profit without making me work to buy stuff from them.

our tesco's has got a hand held scanner you walk around with scanning everything you put in the trolley! if you are lucky you dont have to speak to anyone in the shop at all! bliss.

When my local Sainsburys take the check-out folk away I wont
shop there again.

I can agree with the sentiment.

But... there's always one, ain't there... the self-service checkouts make it easy for me to be a complete anti-social ba$tard, with my mp3 player playing, I can get my shopping done, and not have to converse with any other person.

Misanthropy is the new black.

That said, when it's time for a Friday-night-big-shop, having somebody serve you is much easier when you've got loads.
