The first, and hopefully the only setback. The seat tube is tapered as it approaches the bottom bracket. The low clamp LX derailleur doesn’t fit. The lower bottle cage bolt looks like it might be in the way of a high clamp derailleur. Is it likely that compact cranks don’t fit the early Zaskar? A LX M565 was ordered to work around this. Anyone have suggestions?

A new 27.0 Thomson seatpost and high clamp black LX are installed…just awaiting a Quick Link for the chain and she’s back in 1 piece. Then begins cockpit and cable adjustment. New Jagwire cables and Teflon cable sleeves are buttery smooth.
All but 8 screws are titanium or aluminum and most components were selected for weight savings. As an Avalanche she weighed in at 21.5 lbs. This frame is 2” taller and the stem & bars were replaced. I’m putting my bet on 22.5 lbs.

Done for the timebeing. This remodel should keep ‘er going for the next few years. Riser bars and a shorter stem make the front end shockingly light. I’m accustomed the sportbikes (motorcycles) and old mountain bikes with a long reach. This is gonna require some major adaptation on my part.

Sometimes I can’t help myself. A set of Syncros Big Box rims for sale locally has inspired a 8-speed conversion with XT M738 brifters and a M737 cassette. Also found an AC Manitou fork brace, aluminum nipples, and purple seat clamp to add more zest to ‘er.

Done, again, for the 5th time. 7 to 8 speed conversion on the rear, Syncros Big Box wheels, XT brifters, AC fork brace, and Hope clamping devices have been installed. Wheels need truing because I didn’t use a calibrated finger when changing to aluminum nipples. But she’s a fine specimine!
