After buying some NOS Mavic crossrides off ‘cleanbike’ (top fella!), I’ve fitted them and absolutely love the way this bike looks and rides.
I like it with rigid forks too but have now found the build that I had in my head when I started this renovation. I wanted it to look like a period XC race bike. I love the SIDS that work superb. They have a few marks to the paint so might repaint them in the winter and give them a service.
10.6kg as it stands now....

Looks good, very clean. As someone who rode a 98 Sunn with a similar SID for some time, I'd definitely recommend the rigid fork or finding an original Sunn Obsys, ideally the carbon one.
Regards the headtube badges, I've bought a couple of these. Looks like they are out of stock for 98s at the moment. I thought they were really good. You can see printing marks on the base so it looks a bit different to the originals, but thats being picky, and the stickers themsleves look great.
I found them very fiddly to fit as the bolt supplied didn't protrude very far at all through the headtube, so there was virtually nothing to thread the nut onto. I ended up buying a new nut and bolt 2mm longer, much easier to fit, and then filed down the extra length of the bolt that protruded through the nut so that it wouldn't foul on the fork steerer.

Yeah, I really like the idea of a 3D reproduction head badge....
So in your honest opinion would you return to rigid?
I like the look and performance of the SIDS and in keeping with the period build as it’s only a garage queen that will do dry and light outings but open to advice.
I’m currently building a 1992 mint orange aluminium elite too with pace rc35 so wil end up with two hardtails in the stable.
Maybe at that point I’ll return the Sunn to rigid...

I guess its personal preference at the end of the day, but I put the Sunn I had SIDs on back to rigid and prefer it in terms of looks and handling, with hindsight I think the SIDs were too tall for it, and I'm only ever going to use that for gentle riding too.
I think the headtube badge will be nice finishing touch too.

Thanks mate... I totally agree re head badge but I’d be interested to know what the travel was on SIDS as mine had a crown to centre only 2cm longer than standard forks so after sag is not even noticeable? Think I’ll stick with forks for now as feel awesome. We’re yours longer travel????

I don't know what the axle to crown length was on the SIDs I had (2003 SID Race I think), but pretty sure it was more than 2cm longer than the rigid forks. Looking at your photos more closely I think the front end of my bike was noticeable higher too so I guess they must have been longer travel.

They did do a longer travel version and mine don’t feel any different. I had bomber z1’s previous on thread that made it feel like it was jacked up so maybe yours were longer? I love the way this rides now. If I’m ever brave enough to risk my ocd maybe I should give it a run out at hamsterley when things ease?
