Stumpjumper M2 1998 onwards: Frame differences

Hello, can anyone school me on the various changes to the M2 frame from inception until it's demise?

I realised when I picked up a 20.5" mango frame off ebay recently that it was different to the 18" 1999 Stumpjumper Pro frame which I already had. The chain stays on the 98 frame are different (thinner) and the other tubes seem slightly thinner overall. Both frames are the X butted variation.

I've searched around the web and have found various catalogues but not much info on what changed year to year.

Thanks in advance!

Just my opinion but I have felt that Specialized was always big on advertising and low on details or information. We can't even get a decent explanation of how serial numbers are generated let alone details on various alloys or frame construction. If someone can set me straight on all of it I would love to hear it.

I stumbled across a 1997 catalogue on this site and I'm now wondering if this frame is actually the S works version? Fits the specs in the catalogue: Mango, M2 XX. Could also explain the geometry difference.

I thought it was in 98 that the SWorks was available in Mango, Lime Green or Red. The Stumpjumper was also green but more forest green, red and maybe black (?). This is just from memory and memories are often wrong. I drooled over the lime green when it was new. Now it's making me feel old.

According to the 1997 catalogue the S Works M2 was the only version available in Mango. Not sure about 1998 onwards, I believe the mango colour was available on other versions so it could well be a 1998 frame. I guess I'm just hopeful it's actually an S works!

Now that I'm looking around I think that's a stumpjumper with some nice upgrades. Cool bike. Enjoy it.

I'm a bit late seeing this, but @Neko could even school Specialized on the various changes. If you have any outstanding questions on this, ask this guy.
