Stuck Seat Tube

Hey guys,

On my bike the previous owner had changed the saddle and seat tube, adjusted it for themselves and left it there.

I am a taller guy and therefore need to move the saddle upwards however the seat tube they have used is too big for the frame, any ideas on how I can get it out?

Ive tried plus gas, pipe grips, hitting the underside of the saddle....

cheers
G

I would turn the bike upside down and spray anti seize spray into the tube and let it 'soak' in overnight, try that.. if not ....

It will wreck the seatpost, but as its the wrong size anyway, dont suppose this matters, the other option is to clamp the seatpost in a vice, and try and move the frame around it, and release it this way, it will mean stripping the bike down somewhat in order to do it, but its the way we used to do it in the bike shop BITD ;) :)

Or if all else fails then apply heat to the seatube, and remove, although this will almost certainly destroy the paintwork... ;) :)

Hope this helps...and good luck.. :)

I had one stuck in there, strip it down to a frame, and then clamped the seatpost in a vice and used force of ten people to move it,

Try hacking the top of the post off (assuming it's alloy), then use a hacksaw blade and cut down lengthways.

yes it does take much effort and cursing but it will come out eventually, unless the seatpost has welded/rusted itself to the seatube ,then its a right bugger... depends how long its been in there too... ;)

"Try hacking the top of the post off (assuming it's alloy), then use a hacksaw blade and cut down lengthways."

Good suggestion above, but once you have chopped the seatpost off, there is nothing then to clamp into a vice ! ,bear this in mind :? also to note is, if the seatpost is a long way down into the seatube, then using a hacksaw blade to cut out the remainder is a right pain..

i'm pretty crap at links so i hope the 1 above works but listed in there is the correct way to remove the post similar to the way some others have listed but theres an order to do it in, meaning if one fails try the next way etc.

although i know from a recent pm that that post is still stuck!

worst case if your not sure or having trouble before you cut anything get some advise from a shop. ask them if they have been beaten by a post, i haven't, ever, and that is the answer you should be looking for, if the shop says "we'll have a go" take it elsewhere.

hope that helps and i hope the link works!

:D

p.s good luck!

p.p.s also in that thread is a link to the sheldon brown way, he who must be obeyed!

The worst has happened. The top of the post has now snapped off leaving the post in the frame. Any ideas what now or is my frame now useless?

i'm afraid my friend that if you don't have the tools the only thing you can do is reach for your wallet! :(

don't try and butcher it, it'll make it harder for whoever has to attack it next!

like i said earlier, find a capable shop, and throw a full wallet at them! i usually charge an hours labour (£25) plus a new post. so an hours labour could be £25 to £45 depending where you go.
