Stuck headset cup, removal woes, idiot needs help!

Stripping a saracen with 1" headtube.

Ice toolz headset remover fresh from the box. Suits 1 inch 1 1/8th size.

Follow instructions...

Fit the tool in the headtube

"Spiky" bits spring oout when in the headtube against the inside of the cups, so tool is working there.

Move the tool further down however so that it lies below the headset cups (and so should spring out against the headtube so I can tap the headset cups out. But...

This happens. The "prongs" dont seem to spring out. Assume because the headtube is too short and is compressing the spiky bits from opening up enough.

Is that right? What other methods can I use to get them out. Or am I just being a complete idiot?!

Long screwdriver and hammer and tap it out, tapping around the cups from teh inside.

OR

Large adjustable spanner (or something similar)
A rag if you want the headset

Place rag around headset cups, place spanner over top of the outside of the cups.
Hit with hammer.

Or some other method depending what you have to hand.

but hammers are involved.

If you don't want the headset then just tap it from the outside with blocks of wood, screwdrivers, bars and of course the hammer.

just work your way around it gently so as not to twist it in the frame a lot

use a broom handle or similar down the tool to force the splayed ends out then batter tool with a hammer as per instructions.

failing that, get a wedge shaped bit of hardwood on the outside of the cup and gently tap around the outside using a rubber mallet loosening it a little bit at a time.

I just use an inch round steel tube to remove headsets. You have to be more crafuly to spread the hammering around the entire circumference but it works and you have give it a good old whack.

i use an old handlebar. tap gently round the cups 12-3-6-9 o'clock until it plops out

I always use an old set of steel handlebars, copying FC's method up there^^^

Only reason I don't use a screwdriver is the risk (on my part) of getting heavy handed and scoring the inside of the headtube..

Had a go with the screwdriver method. They seem really stuck, no movement.

Am currently soaking in penetrating oil to ease them a little (I hope).

l use a length of steel steerer tube but it does take a good whack around the edge of each cup Never failed me yet
