Stuck Bottom Bracket

A simple bolt or QR skewer and decent bench vice work wonders, I've not been beaten by a BB yet using a similar method to LGF's

Give it a whack

As per other suggestions. soak it in lube. try to bolt the socket in. heat the frame gently with a heat gun or the misses hair dryer. have a mate support the frame. get a spanner on the socket, get a big hammer and hit the spanner in the direction of removal. this should shock it. once moved it should come out

ive had a problem with a stuck adjusting cup (left hand cup)
unfortunately theres no axle there to be able to bolt into place (which i always do, great minds think alike LGF)
i got a splined BB tool that had a large hole through rather than the socket version and held it in place with a park tools headset press.
using a large spanner it freed up :D

Last resort, removal of old type bottom bracket ;

Tools; Dremel with reinforced abrasive cutting disc and arbor and a pair of pliers. It took five 25mm discs to cut and two of them i broke through not keeping a steady hand.

Oh, wearing goggles helps as well.

Hmm, I think the guy at the bike shop said he'd knackered the plastic bit trying to get it out! Might have to go to more brutal lengths, I'm reluctant to get rid of a perfectly good frame just 'cos the BB is stuck!

I'll see what I can do and update the thread with pics if I have any success! :oops:

Silverclaws, that's a great job to get that all out without trashing the shell threads. I salute you for that!

Mr Scruff, if it's a plastic bit can you not use a hair dryer/light heat as mentioned before until the cup goes soft then dig it out? You might have to chase the threads through but that's a small price to pay.

Oh, a plastic sleeve, well, that's even easier, burn it out. Get a blow torch and melt the bugger, start near the axle and melt away. Maybe once the plastic sleeve has lost it's position, the other side will be easier to shift. Might melt the bearing race seals as well, that might help.

But, if you have a photo of the situation, the many minds on here just love a difficult job to get their mental teeth into.

Get the other side out first if you can then it should be easy to break the plastic cup up from the back, done this before.

Ross, agree with the above, forget the plastic side for now, concentrate on the other side, preferably in a bench vice with BB tool and use the frame as leverage, never failed to work for me (even on the old type). Then you can get at the plastic bit which may have been cross threaded or something
