Stripped steerer tube thread advice please

I might have just bought a 90 Muddy Fox Pathfinder , I say might because the seller informs me that he has just looked and the headset won't tighten up as the thread is stripped on the steerer.

I would like to avoid swapping the forks as the paint is in great condition and it's in the nice neon blue ( that I'd never match up properly )

What are my options ? The guy says he'll cancel the sale if I want , but I must say that I quite like the bike.

Not sure there will be enough tube sticking out to put an ahead set and stem on it ?

Any ideas ?

A threaded steerer is much shorter than an ahead type for the same headtube length so that won't be an option.

Options are to have the steerer replaced by a good welder which is tricky or replace the fork and have one painted to match.

Get the seller to send some pics to check how bad it is. It may actually be the headset collar is screwed and not the steerer as steerers are generally steel and headsets often alloy.

Get some pictures,it could be the headset stripped.

But you can fit a headtube extender and run threadless if needed.
May or may not need some alteration to the threads if if the compression part will not clamp down that way though.

It would offer more purchase on the threads. But it still needs some threads to lock on to, have you seen a photo of how bad this is?

I would agree with minifreak, find out whether it's the steerer or the nut first

That looks familiar ... :-(

I don't know how to fix that without damaging the paint or performing fairly major (i.e. Reasonably expensive) surgery :-(

Build it up flush with braze and then recut a thread perhaps?

Would braze (silver solder?) be strong enough?
I know it holds tubes together without probs but cant say i am aware of it being threaded or tapped.


But being steel, it is more fixable than Al or carbon.

I have brazed and rethreaded fork threads many times and the repairs have lasted.
