Story of a summer love. GT Zaskar 1996

I had one of these BITD. A really nice bike, but a bit harsh ride.
That's what I was thinking, it looks like a hard shoot.
The triple triangle is also very hard. I know this from my BMC Teamelite, even though it is made of carbon, it is not very comfortable.

I'm waiting for the connecting rods, there are still about 2 weeks until they arrive.
So I have been taking advantage to see what I am clear about and what I am not clear about.
-Wheels: I almost always make the wheels myself, I like it and it relaxes me. This time I will make an exception. It's clear to me, they are a scandal and I couldn't resist.
-Fork: A yellow Judy SL? There are already too many GTs with that configuration. Blue SID?... good option, there are several beautiful versions.
But I fancy another option, there is life beyond Manitou and Rock Shox. I have it clear
-Front derailleur: there was no Shimano option in those years, so it's clear, an XTR. I thought about a Top Swing because the low clamp allows you to see the frame better, it is cleaner. A 952 seemed like the best option to me, its gray color is not as dark as other XTRs and the spoon is shiny silver. They work great although it is easy for them to become loose if they are not taken care of.
-Cassette/chain: No doubt, an XTR, specifically a 960, but it doesn't matter, they are all superb. There is always one in a box in the garage. An HG 93 chain is the perfect complement, shiny and resistant. Light?...no, but they are few grams and it is worth using it for the first time. I have a Yumeya but with many km.
-Tires: Ritchey Z-Max in 1.95 in the style of the time, narrow to ride fast in races. I like them and they work well. Even Ritchey has made them again, for a reason.

-Bottom bracket: Race Face Taperlock Ti in 107 mm. You can see the catalog of the cranks I wanted and put that used the Shimano 107 standard. I would have liked to check it before bringing the bottom bracket, but the cranks take a long time and if I wait for them and then order the bottom bracket, I end up in August, I go on vacation and I don't finish it until October. I prefer to take risks and trust the technical specifications.
-Bar & Stem: Kore. In the '96 catalog it is what the Zaskar has, but that is not the reason, I don't want a catalog bike. It is simply because they deserve it. It is my tribute to a brand that was cool in the late '90s. Good pieces with good finishes, countless colors, reliable and more or less light. I had a red Kore with a Manitou SX Ti in the '90s and everyone stared.
In addition, its oval tubes looked very good with the new frame tubes that were no longer round as always. Everything fit well. We were talking about it in Spain the other day, now almost no one uses it, they don't give value to the brand. This is my little tribute to Kore.
-Seatpost: I am very clear about it, but it does not appear to be in acceptable condition or it is not 27'2. In the end everything comes, I know it well, it's just a matter of patience.

Now what I'm not clear about:
-The brakes: I got some Avid Mag...they are really nice and light. I also know that they work well. But... they look too similar to any other Avid I have some Single Digit 7s and they look too similar. I don't think I'll put them on even though I really like Avid. In any case, I can always use an Avid Mag in any project, they are a reliable bet.
-Handlebar grips: Well, some red Onza Ule's. Yes, red. It doesn't seem like it but it makes sense, although I doubt it more and more. In any case I have plan "B", some Bontrager foam or some Ritchey which are always a solution that looks good. I'm still thinking.

And just wait for the cranks to arrive to start assembling the bike. I don't like to "go by chapters", you can assemble a bicycle in an afternoon, if no problem arises, and it is more gratifying to see it all at once than little by little. In addition, it is better to have the pieces stored in boxes than to store the frame with several pieces already attached because it is easier for something to get scratched or hit. Plus it gets in the way a lot.
What I am clear about is the transmission. There I have no doubt.
I love Grip Shift, I have had it since its first model for triathlon. In fact, the changes in the grip always seemed logical to me: fast, comfortable, light and above all very simple, something important when you were talking about competing. Also for things in life, right now it is the best option for my hands. A 9.0 SL is the one chosen. I had one at home with the grips in a very nice ash color, but I thought this bike required a different version
Well, almost all my bicycles have gears on the grip, this was not going to be the exception, Jjjj
 
I used to have a Votec dual crown fork in my Zaskar. I cut out the blue part of the decals to match my yellow Magura rim brakes. Would look great with a yellow Judy as well.

I think the Votec fork looks great on your Zaskar, it gives that look of robustness and competition that suits the Zaskar so well.
For the forks, consider 2 options: a '98 SID. I think this was the best option, it has a beautiful blue and discreet yellow bands. The other a SID WCS Team in its dark candy blue version. It's amazingly pretty, with the Woodman headset in the same tone I have, a saddle lock or seat post in that color and some Woodman wheel locks in deep blue, I think it would also look pretty. But in the end I thought of another theme for the bike.
From what else I can say about your Zaskar...it's spectacular. Congratulations. The yellow Gt logo is very personalized and I love the tires. Today I was dusting off some Ritchey's that I have saved to wear. They are the ZED model in 1.9 Pro version with a small blue band. I'll see how they look with the wheels.
By the way, I also considered some HS 33 in blue, but it is difficult for them to be as "clean" as on your bicycle, generally the hydraulic hose tends to twist and I don't like it. Of course they are perfect on your bike, congratulations again.

The cranks finally arrived.
It took me a while to find them but they appeared. Let's see if I can get the seatpost too.
