Stem for Specialized 97 S-Works

As the title. I have a 97 s-works and have a mint 150mm titanium stem on it at the mo, but I think I would benefit from a shorter stem.
What ya got? :D

Preference would be for a shorter version of what I have, around 120mm, bit of rise maybe.
I can use my existing stem in the deal if need be and I will consider other nice quality stems and indeed advice as to what you guys think would go with the bike. I seem to remember some Specialized bikes came with control tech stems for instance?
Needs to be silver in colour though, show us what ya have kickin about :D
Not really looking for NOS stuff as the bike gets plenty of use so it'd be wasted on it.

Cheers

Ben

Don't think Spesh Ti stems were made shorter than 120mm and those are very rare (never seen one).
However, I happen to have a NOS 1 1/8" / 135mm stem available if you're interested?

Thanks for the info, wondered why I hadn't seen any below 135mm.
Is yours a NOS specialized titanium then? I don't mind NOS as long as it's not NOS prices  ;) as the bike gets a lot of use.
Would you be after a straight sale or maybe swap?

Ben

I could be wrong but if you are trying to be period correct, I didn't think those Ti stems were still being used in '97. Shouldn't it be one of those grey coloured stems with the big "S" in white on the top?

No you could well be right.
I'm sure I saw a 97 Stumpy on here with the same stem as mine and it looked great, as I think mine does, it's just a bit toooo long.

I'm not fanatical about it being period correct as the frame has quite a bit from circa 99-00 on it, but I don't think the latest stems would suit it.
I'd rather have something high quality from the same sort of era.
I mean there are plenty of silver alu S stems I could get, but it seems a shame after having something of such a nice quality on there, and to me the bike is worth it.

I know I'm not really helping here! I guess I'll know when I see it.

The stem I think is correct is not one of the silver alu ones. It is a dark grey/blue colour and is an S-Works rather than specialized. I may be wrong though. I actually quite like them as they are quite understated. The Ti ones were notorious for breaking from what I have read on this site!

Is it the highly polished one you have or the more dull earlier one? I have one of the earlier ones on my 1995 S-Works FSR, but the bike is still "in progress" so haven't actually ridden it yet!

Ah OK, thanks for the info.
I was going to go for silver as the seat post is silver, well highly polished like chrome now.
My stem is pretty shiny, so would think that's a slightly later one?

Ben

I've got a silver alloy Specialized stem, probably about 120mm. I can send pics if you're interested?

Specialized Stems

Hi Guys
Of the later specialized S works stems I cant recall any that were polished finish. It was just the standard ahead alu that was polished or the ti.
There is a black version that only has S works on the face plate, a dull/non polished version that has S works on stem and face plate. I do recall a few others but cant remember any polished but I will have a look through my old books to have a double check.
I had a couple of pics that should be below  of a couple of my S works. I have seen a few standard stems (as well as cranksets) advertised as S works but unless it actually says 'works' across the S its just a standard specialized component. Good quality mind, just not as light or as expensive as S works.
Anyway I will probably be corrected but thats what my memory is telling me. For 97 it would have been the black, unpolished or even the M2 stem.
The black M2 is slightly older looking by not having a removable faceplate but it is the lightest of all of them. 158gm for M2 + 175gm for S works
