:? Hammer it in yourself,it isnt a big deal
1. Sit it on top of your steerer
2. tap it down so the first spring clip is inside the steerer and the other clip sitting flush.
3. Screw in the cap bolt and tap the starnut further in till it looks about the right depth[im about 3/4" from the top]

If you find it starting to go in skew, tap the side of the bolt to straighten up.

 I didnt know there was a special tool for this,i though everybody just hammered it in

cheers for the replies guys and gals... as I said in my OP I have done this before but never into such a bling pair of forks... considering going with a Head Doctor this time as it's a build for a mate who's happy to pay the extra - obviously this allows them to take the Head Doctor with them too, should they ever wish to fiddle with my perfect build :x cheers, Al

Fitting a starnut to an Amp fork alloy steerer is a nightmare. The internal diameter is smaller than usual.I had to grind down the spring steel bits to make it fit,I went through 3 till i got it right.

Somebody one here has them now :(

Wouldnt even bother with a star nut

Simply headlock it all the way. Less hassle and bebe reused time and time again

Get somthing like a Hope Head Doctor.

The star nut is an appalling bit of engineering that was only introduced to make mass production quicker.

Anything that scours the inside of an Aluminium or carbon steerer cannot be a good thing!

In the last 20 years I've never paid any LBS to install a star nut.

In this part of the world they'll tap it in for free.

If you are a regular at your LBS or they have an interest in older bikes then just ask them nicely if they'll do it.

Screw an old brake block into the star nut and just tap it in. If it starts going in a bit skew just turn the block to the high spot and tap.

This has been going for 6 days now,For gawds sake hammer the bugger in and be done with it
