SRAM shifters - indexing issues

set up as follows:

SRAM 7 speed shifters
SRAM 7 speed cassette
Shimano Deore rear mech

shifting the right hand shifter up and down, it seems to skip a couple of gears in the middle.

these shifters were used OK with the previous set up (same shifters, Shimano 7 speed freewheel, Shimano Deore rear mech)

do SRAM and Shimano have a history of indexing issues?

Sram x0 9 speed have different amount of cable pull to shimano so the rear mech cannot be interchanged.

Dunno if the same applies to yours but it would not surprise me if it did.

According to SRAM's own website they are 1:1 ratio so will not work with shimano.

Feck. Although seam rear mech should be cheap enough...?.
