SRAM and Shimano. Mix and match

No, you cannot mix numbered SRAM with Shimano - the cable pull per click is completely different.

SRAM is brilliant especially in situations where cable sticking is a problem - very muddy areas, tandems etc.

But for X-type SRAM you need the SRAM shifter. I like SRAM cassettes - they are cheaper than Shimano and last longer. I can't detect any difference in shifting.

so x770 shifters and a X9 rear mech would not work ?

nope, XT M770 (all shimano) shifters are 2:1 pull. all SRAM X products are 1:1 pull.

if you want to go with SRAM shifters you have to use there 2:1 shimano compatible line, such as the Attacks triggers or twists:

Need to change my rear M739 fro something more modern (and less bashed)
It was either goingto be XT M770 or a SRAM X9 mech. The shifters are M770 and the cassette is either SRAM or SHimano 9spd.

Will this combo work ?

If you use an X9 rear mech you must use either another X shifter or the older ESP range as has been mentioned. ;)

With Shimano shifters you have to use a Shimano rear mech

You can use any chain & cassette you like, so long as it's the same speed as the rear shifter

You can also use any MTB front mech (Sram or Shimano) with both Sram & Shimano shifters

If you want an X9 rear mech you will have to use a set of X series Sram shifters (I have a spare pair of X7's lying about doing nowt ;) )

I use X9 shifters with an X9 rear mech, XT cassette & XT front mech & a KMC chain.

Cheers. Nice clear dvice.
I have no real love for shimano or SRAM, but I have always had good service from shimano kit (except their chain).
My intrest in the X9 rear mech was out of curiosity. And teh fact that my M739 is battered and needs an upgrade.
So, given tht my M770 shifters are new (too new to change) then it'll have to be a shimano rear mech rather than SRAM...............
Perhaps a M772 or CRC are doing some older XT 9 speeds for £30 still...
