After selling a set some time ago and regretting it I've finally landed another set. I've never known much about them so hopefully the wise owls of rb can provide some info about these lovely wheels.

First up, when we're they produced? I'm guessing around 93 but it is just a guess based on some bikes I've seen wearing them.

Next up, what bikes were specced with them as standard. I see that rts and sts seem to be natural bed fellows but were there others that left the factory spin shod?

Keeping them rolling is my next task. The set I've got are 100% true and have great bearings, but when the day comes that the bearings or free hub need replacing, where can I source parts from?

Last but not least, I'm wondering what build I should fit them on? I have a team rts that is currently fitted with crossmax xl ceramics, and an sts built with spinergy xyclones. I could swap out either set and be happy but am thinking about other frames that might suit the wheels to add to the collection, any thoughts? I have a spare sts I could dig out and build but have an itch to do something else.

Oh, my wheels are decal free and do look stealthy but I might consider new decals. Would gil be the best source for some replacements if I decide the stealth loom isn't for me?

Two sets :) it took me forever to put together one good set.

They showed up in MBA in 1993.

The landed on some show type bikes in magazines and on a couple GT bikes in ads but I don't think they were truly spec'd on anything.

Not sure on the bearings.

Decals were on eBay pretty consistently for a time.

I love them but I was 16 in 1993 and I remember wanting them badly. They are pretty polarizing on here. I think they look great but they are a harsh ride. My set will likely end up on a Mantis. It will be a wild bike so they will look at home (to me :) )

Re:

I vaguely remember a full suspension Univega(Shokblok?)advertised with Tri Spokes and full Campag,it cost several squillion trillion.I`d love to see a pic of it now.

Re:

I know a member on here (Strongman1979) recently had a set of Spins sorted with new bearings by Partridge Cycles near Exeter in Devon, apparently they'd sourced some bearings locally.

Thankfully mine are pretty much as new right now, just looking to make sure that when the time comes I'm armed and ready.

Thanks for that. I've not had them apart to know what bearing size is needed but good to know they aren't some oddball and difficult to source size. As for freehub, I had no idea whether it was a standard shimano or other, so again good that there are still sources available.

You might like to know that Custom Engineered Wheels Inc, who manufactured the Spins is still going.

Mostly concentrating on the wheelchair/mobility market (where they are known as X-Core, to avoid confusion with Spinergy wheels), but they do have a placecard/holder on their site suggesting that a new bike wheel is being planned:

All the best,

I don't think they was fitted to any bike from the supplier, was always the shops that fitted them afterwards.

Back in the 90's I had a 20" set on my trials bike and a 26" set on a GT zaskar, again, used for trials.

Bearing were always easy to change and get hold of.

I've seen them fitted on a GT LTS, the plasticky one that the headtubes kept breaking on, seemed to go well.....look well!
