I am looking to replace a Mavic 501 Hub annular bearings ( can't understand how they grate a bit - this is supposed to last forever - french top stuff  )

So I am looking for the specs or even a SKF ref for it

I have the chart but just a Mavic ref ( and not even sure about it as deciphering is tricky ) and fear it may be useless even in France

Thanks for the help

^ what he said :D . Did it myself a couple of weeks back with deep groove 6001 bearings, t'was surprisingly simple.

not too tricky to push the old out and push the new in ?
any tip or useful tool ?

Re:

Once i'd stripped the spindle out there was plenty of room to knock the old ones out, I used a blunt ended flat bladed screwdriver and hammer (with care). I then used one of the old bearings, and a plastic mallet, to knock the new ones in. I put a smear of copper-ease on the outer face of the new bearings to help things along. The non-drive side (I was doing this to a rear wheel) was the trickier of the two as the old bearing went in quite a way but I managed to extract it without any drama. I gave the new bearings a LIGHT tap all the way round on the outer cage edge, with a flat ended punch, just to make sure they were seated well and reassembled as per the diagram you have, the whole thing took maybe 20 minutes and the wheel now spins perfectly. Good luck.

I just found this thread via the search function.
I have a set of Mavic 531 hubs that are the MTB equivalent of the 501.
The info above is super useful. Thankyou!

Hi @onegoodbike how did you remove and refit the cir-clips on the spindle?

Hi JCS,

It was 7 years back so things are a little hazy, but I did the bearing replacement on a rear 501 hub and as far as I recall there were no cir-clips just endcaps that threaded into the axle ends.

Sorry not to be of more help.

Hi @onegoodbike how did you remove and refit the cir-clips on the spindle?
If I ever have to........very carefully!.

Matt

Thanks for the feedback. I have the 531 hubs (Mountain Bike) and want to dismantle them to replace the cartridge bearings.
