Specialized Stumpjumper Mystery Model

Other brands used u-brakes on their smallest frames, even after the larger frames went to cantis, to get over issues with heel clearance. Not sure if Specialized did this too

The frame is metal  . Carbon fiber doesn’t rust. If this helps at all, the rear drop outs are not vertical and the bottom bracket is the old style pre-sealed cartridge.

I'm far from an expert but I own a '90 Stumpjumper Comp with a chainstay U brake. Someone on here mentioned that this was specced on the smallest frame size for clearance. Yours is the same size as mine. But all XT and newer logos. To me that points to an Epic 91 like this...

I considered this too.
Also made me wonder if they had to ditch the way the frame is constructed in the smallest sizes - i.e. could it be an unlugged Epic (not very Epic!) due to its size? Catalogue small print may say this if so (if there is any). That said, smallest size offered in the Epic or Epic Ultimate was 17" and this is smaller...

You can narrow down the dates the individual Shimano parts were produced by looking for the date code stamps.
Ok...date codes take 2:

Crank arms are: NH/NJ - year 1989
Front Der.: NJ - year 1989
Shifters mayyybe: PI - year 1991
Seat: 1989
Rear Der: OA - year 1990

Hubs: cannot find
Brake levers: cannot find

Told you I was no expert: just realised the EPIC was carbon. wow! In that case: maybe 1990 Comp like mine... or 1991.
Codes point to up to 91 if the data is correct
91 catalogue says smallest frame was 16.5 which is what you have. I have the Ubrake on that size (1990)
91 catalogues also says seatpost was 'Post Modern' (not XT) for what its worth...

1990 Comp only came in white. Maybe a 1990 Stumpjumper Team? Except the stickers don't match the catalog.
