Specialized M2 Info Thread/Serial Registry

I picked up a 1995 M2 FS recently, in the midst of restoring it. Pics coming soon(ish).

Just picked up a 19 inch in Steel Blue. I was originally bought in Sausalito.
Serial number is 96S4M14438.
I bought it from the original owner so I think it is all as it came from the shop except tyres and saddle. The bars and stem are not standard but he had kept the originals all these years so I have those. IMG_1813.webp

Nice! This is the more obscure late ‘96 model with the revised dropouts.

Here is the before and after a quick clean with soapy water, removal of extraneous bit and refitting of original stem and bar. Note this is the non FS version ( I have an 18" FS 96 Stumpie) so I am going to put these forks on the FS and am trying to source some appropriate rigid forks for this one. I have a pic of one of these bone stock with a Q21R… is that catalog spec or was the rigid model jus dropped halfway thru ‘96?

I think the guy just bought the rigid model and specified a suspension fork, why this one I have no idea. Perhaps he wanted an FS and got a good deal on the rigid model...I wish he had stuck with the original fork though.

The Mantitous seem to be locked up atm though so I might be having my first dig into the innards of this model. I'm hoping it just needs new elastomers although I am slightly concerned about the "cartridge system" mentioned on the forks.

I like to see that picture though.

The Mach 5 is okay to work on but I have a deep hatred for it. The damper is at the bottom of one of the stanchions. You should be fine just replacing the elastomers and greasing the bushings (really well, these things suck). It may get harder if the elastomers have melted in the cartridge leg.

So i have a specialized M2PRO I bought a frame specialized epic allenz carbon fibre I snapped it going up a local hill at the time I was really into cycling. I was a bean stick the specialized rep saw the frame and replaced it with the M2Pro I did look at the serial number somthing-S-R-03569
The frame was apparently the race colors of specialized @ that time.
so built my self Shimano 105 brake caliper 105 hubs 105 front mec deor xt mountain bike rear mec. sprocet is 11-23 7 speed 42-54 front the chainset is mistral by omega.

I changed the rims last year to potholes. Its a lovely bike needs a good deep clean.
It has some nasty gear levers had them put on a few years ago because i wanted gears on the breaks not on the down tube.
Its my fav bike.. but have a new bike
