Its not just that ebay wont investigate its more the point that the claim then becomes between the seller and ebay, with ebay putting the refunds up front, then chasing the relevant parties for it.

Thats a bit heavy going to suddenly be faced with the prospect of an ebay lawyer :?

A bit like the loan shark passing on the debt to the heavy mob who dont do excuses. And any complaints about that system you risk losing or closing the account as the only recourse, and for those tiny fees ebay likely couldnt give a rats 4r5e.

I'm worried now - sold two items that went for £200 each, both listed specifically as 'spares or repairs' and the faults they have.

Are people asking for their money back because a spares/repair item is 'not as described'? It seems a bit of a grey-ish area

The Consumer Rights Act applies to both new and used items. It's worth bearing in mind that second-hand goods are likely to be judged less rigorously new goods. For example, it's not reasonable to expect that used goods will be of the same quality as new goods. In any event, sellers of second hand goods remain under an obligation to ensure that the goods are as described.

Buisness sellers are by law required to accept returns under the distance selling laws. Private sellers are not, and as long as you have not mis-represented the item then you dont have to do anything. However!, by using ebay you agree to their terms of sale and therefore any item regardless of any situation can be returned and refunded for any reason whatsoever, there are time limits though.

Regardless of the rules, in my experience of ebay, a buyer can just invent any claim that the item wasn't as described in some way and ebay will always force the seller to accept the return (and pay for the return postage), and refund in full. Ebay will never investigate, it's easier just to have automated system side with the buyer, regardless of the issue. It's why I always chuckle when I read listings that emphasise that the item condition is clearly described so the seller won't accept returns under any circumstances - I'm afraid you do, you just haven't realised it yet :)

When you list an item it gives you the option to accept (or not) returns. However, underneath the box you tick is a note stating that you still have to accept returns regardless of which box you tick

It's a bit like the tickbox to select whether you want to accept payment by Paypal or not - if you don't tick it it just prevents you from listing the item
