Slightly nerdy detail question

Chain catcher on chainring to prevent chain getting jammed up behind crank.

Example on Shimano 600 1986 chainring...

I have a Shimano 600 1981 NOS chainring without one of these. Were they drilled and added after or not introduced until after 1981. When did they introduce this? How did people survive without one of these, other than by properly adjusting the front mech, clearly :D

(The question is slightly nerdy, the fact that you know the answer is not nerdy at all!)

Re:

its a detail touch, you don't need it.
Some have 2 holes and you unscrew the pin and put it on the correct hole for your spider. This is where the fifth arm of the spider is attached directly behind the crank.

We never had them at all in the 70's :D Just adds to the excitement of setting up the front mech :D

Thanks guys!

I will now live dangerously without it, may even take up cycling on the wrong side of the road :D
