Skeeter 1 's 1993 Kona Cindercone build thread.

You're not mucking about are you? :-D This is really going to be special, I think. Have you gone up a size at all?
Here's my Kona story. Late 92 I went to Bicycleexpo in Alexandra Palace and hoovered up all the catalogues. Kona were there and Saracen who were two of my favourite stands at the show. I was REALLY keen on a Saracen Traverse Elite because - that colour! BUT Kona were almost as pretty but carried way more cool points in those days.
I got home and someone stole my Raleigh and insurance was incoming. I went to loads of saracen dealers, none of whom had stock and weren't expecting any till around April. Mike Cookson in Manchester, however was expecting KONA stock early in December, and told me that I could have the Rockshox upgrade even on the Fire Mountain. I checked and they were sure so I paid upfront. A week later I got a call from the shop to say that they were wrong, and very sorry, the Rockshox upgrade ( 120 extra ) was only available on Lava Dome and up, BUT they had a solution: did I want a specialized Future Shock instead? Yes I did.
I loved the FM so much that when my then wife needed a new bike she bought a Hahanna ( the only bike apart from a Rockhopper that was available in a small enough size )
Lots of fun was had on those bikes, especially around the Forest of Dean and Cairngorms. I think I am going to have to do a similar project to yours. - Onzas, Vetta ( I had a Vetta SL but just the chromo one but it's the best looking saddle ever isn't it?) Pace RC35s and..er..Look pedals.

Really looking forward to seeing how this turns out.

Hi, Thank you for your hearty reaction to my post!
It means a lot when someone takes the time to write words of support and general chit chat regarding our love for bikes.
When you say have I gone up a size...do you mean compared to my Kilauea?? If so it's two sizes,as the Kilauea was based on a more fun bike but my cindercone will be a more racey feel and suited to me and my height.
I remember my local bike shop offering a fork upgrade at the time but I couldn't push that far as it would have been another long wait to save the money!
Yes I do love the Vetta...I haven't held/seen one since the last day I saw my Cindercone back in about 98!!
This build is filling me with so much joy...every component that comes through the door takes me back . I haven't even started building the bike yet as I don't want all this to end!!
I'm absolutely loving the research for parts and Bidding/buying/ pleading ha ha .
This certainly is a journey for me and I can't wait to see the end result.

By the way..,.What does BOAB mean?? I've had to Google it,but not sure if this is what you mean....

Hi mate, you're welcome! It's great to hear your whole story behind the bike and how you're going with it. BOAB is just short for Baldy on a Bike - me signing off :)
With the sizes yes I was wondering if you'd stayed the same sizes from bike to bike as I have changed a few times myself depending on what I wanted the bike for, good to know I am not alone on that score.

Good luck with the build and thanks for letting us in on how it's going.
Oh and I have just found a Vetta myself for the Saracen I am picking up on Friday - enthusiasm it seems is infectious :)

Yes I've found out previously on certain groups people are let's say VERY forthcoming with their negative comments...like "I don't like the seat angle" orrrr "that frame too big" bla bla bla!
I've found it very hard deciding on what to put on it,and the forks were a massive hard decision as the price of build has gone up massively now 🫣.
The project 2s are in great nic ,and I know people love the original spec, and I appreciate that...i just wish I could do both to be honest.
But who didn't add trick bits to their bikes back in the day?....and still now .
This build really is personal...like a time machine for me.
I don't think deep down I ever got over the loss of that bike as at a young age I gave up a whole summer playing with friends just to get it.
It wasn't like my parents were skint...just old fashioned and wanted me to learn the value of money and know you never really get anything for free in life.
I was doing some very fine detailing last night and found myself staring deep into the green paintwork...in the right light it's just amazing!! I was mesmerized ha ha.
Great find with the saddle... great minds hey 🤘🏻

Yes the size is suited to my height where as the Kilauea was an impulsive buy as I had given up searching for a Cindercone at the time.
It looks great but it wasn't really me and feels soulless.

These will do nicely...I was running a set of these back then,so I just couldn't go any other direction when it came to picking my stopping power... PXL_20230512_160932957.jpg
