That's a lovely Stumpy, with a great story. As for the age, check your Shimano. They stamped date codes on the back of absolutely everything. Here's the chart to decipher the code:

I'm seeing "V/A" on the back of the deraileurs, but the years for build of my bike would be quite a bit off using that code. I think I should be seeing something like N, O, P, Q, for the year, much more likely. If my bike is indeed a 1991 (and I think that's correct) then I would think that the Shimano parts date code would likely be a year or two before that, like "N" or "O"?

Can anyone help me identify the model year? It's still all original, aside from the seat and grips. (I don't recall if I replaced the seat post or not.)
Regardless of the year, you've got a perfect real keeper!
Here are the Stumpjumper-related pages from Specialized catalogs:
- 1990 Specialized catalog, page 8
- 1991 Specialized catalog, page 29
- 1992 Specialized catalog, page 46
It can't be 1992 as the catalog shows only 'yellow' and 'metallic purple' available colors.
It can't be 1990 because that year Specialized logo font looked like this.
Your bike is the 1991 Stumpjumper. It is peculiar that 1991 catalog doesn't have 'Tange' listed in the specs; however, it is shown on your bike's seatpost decal.
