Re: '92 950 Singletrack build thread

Bought the frame and forks on here recently and started a build thread but many of the pictures have since been lost.
The attraction was the True Temper OX double butted tubing used in the US build all joined together by some nice lugs. The original triple butted Tange Big Fork was a bonus too. The package included the original headset, bottom bracket, chainset, front mech and seat clamp. Everything else came from here or the cave.

I started by removing everything before cleaning and repacking the headset and BB. In the past I have used frame saver inside but the sun here melts it so that it runs out of the gas escape holes in the frame and forks. Lots of WD 40 will have to do.

I found a close match to deal with the scratches in the "Black Forest Green" paintwork and finished off with some T cut.

It all went together quite quickly with the only problems being the unusual way that the front mech is actuated (the net came to the rescue here) and having to use a shim for the 27.2 seat pin to fit the 29.8 seat tube.

Since the pictures were taken I've finished the build (for now) having taken a few rides and have been delighted with how the frame and forks climb and ride.

Plans are to shed some weight by replacing the saddle and maybe the BB. The wheels too are heavy and use a freewheel with some very high gearing, I'll be replacing them with some Mavics which have a freehub, taking the opportunity to go retromod, 3 X 9 and tubeless. I'm hoping a sub 25lb build is possible.

Anyway, here's some pics of the build partly done.

Photographs from the first short trip, yet without stickers.

I wanted something to ride around town, across the river, etc.

There was some old C'Dale on the cue, the OCLV carbon frame, and the GT Zaskar Expert (06 - the last with the pins for the V-brakes). In the end, the carbon fiber frame, which was originally purple Trek 9800 from 1995, was auctioned off. What now? I did not want to change it, the paint is nice - such a delicious metallic effect, that goes out in the sunshine. Gary Fisher built on these frames theirs Supercalibers and Procalibers, there where in similar metallised varnishes, so it would be Recaliber. Because it's recycled, and in blue the frames at Gary were not ...

The bike behaves nicely, as a whole, it is so elastic, but it does not "float" anywhere. It's fantastic light and has a tap.

Real weight is 8,7kg without the pedals. The weight can be under 8.5 kg - at home is the Ritchey WCS saddle, the Bontrager grips have 15g...
Moreover, RedMonkey grips really surprised me, they are far more comfortable than ESI. ... and I do not want EggBeaters, it's a slider for the city and sometimes I want ride to the pub in sneakers :)
