Re:

Oh and if anybody is looking for winter gloves, I can highly recommend the endura pro S.L. 2 primaloft gloves which Santa got me.

Been out last 2 days in near freezing temps, fingers stayed toasty throughout the ride p wpwithout a liner glove needed. Lining remains in place as well. My new favourite winter glove, hpginna order the matching socks as the primaloft insulation is brilliant.

You must like them, you’re even taking photo’s of them on top of trig points ;)

Lol well spotted.

Great idea for that thread btw. Hopefully we can all meet up once again in 2021 at some point

Re:

FU!! 2021!!! :x first ride of the year was postponed due to self inflicted alcohol related illness this morning
So this afternoon I dragged the Twins out of the shed for a check over, and decided I'd take the Hardrock for a short ride to the beach to clear my head.
I got as far as the end of the road before the chain snapped and I twatted my knee on the handlebars
It seems the cycling Gods were conspiring against me, the chain quicklink had broken, never had that happen before? So I hobbled home to put ice on my knee and open a cold beer! :D

Riding can wait till tomorrow ...

Hey Jimo, sorry to hear about that first ride coming to a halt but it's better to get it out the way at the start of the year.
For me I decided to take the Mercian out as the weather finally got a bit better this afternoon.
Not the best shakedown conditions being mid winter on wet or damp roads and the main thing needing finished being the mudguards, but I was really keen to get it ridden and sorted and see if the difference between the two Mercians geometry wise was really noticeable.
I had originally planned just to go a couple of mile along the road and back as the main road was reasonably dry and quiet as well.
The bike was riding really sweetly, gears were fine, position was fine with everything just quietly rolling along. I ended up turning inland and taking the long back roads home, the only problem being that they were a bit wetter and I had to pass through a farm that had a good bit of silage runoff seeping across the road. Most was fine, or so I thought until I got home and removed my jacket to find road grime sprayed up my back. Just glad I had my jacket on.
Anyway home just on dark after a really nice ride with the Mercian handling really nicely and finding while I have a few things to tweak, like changing brake pads and the hoods, the mains things like contact points, seat, pedals etc were all spot on and comfortable. A good start.
The geometry differences between the two KOMs is quite noticeable on the road. While they are only small differences in geometry and chain stay length I think the fork rake difference combined with the chainstay length are what makes this feel more comfortable again, especially on the less than ideal roads around here. These are just some initial thoughts and time will tell if they are in the ballpark.
Home just on dark so a quick wash, the bike and myself and then some lovely soup to warm up before dinner. It was cold but not icy.
Home everyone has had a nice start to the New Year and hopefully we can all meet up soon, maybe a Baltic Bawbags?

Re:

That Mercian looks right at home on those roads Jamie, and at least you managed to stay upright, unlike myself this morning

I went for an early morning mtb ride at nearby Kirkhill Forest today, my first proper ride of the new year.
What I hadn't realised though was that it must have rained/frozen/snowed during the night, my first clue was when the traction control light in my van was flashing furiously away on the short drive to the trails!

I usually park on a quiet industrial estate and take the back way into the forest, up a farm track, well , as soon as I got out of my van I could tell it was going to be "interesting" , sheet ice on the road, footpath, everywhere.
I set off slowly up the farm track and after 2 falls in the first 50m decided I'd better push up the first hill... easier said than done wearing SPD shoes, I was in half a mind to just turn back and call it quits before I slipped on the ice and properly hurt myself, but I reasoned if I pushed on then the trails in the forest proper would be less icy.
I had to walk the bike down the next hill as well as it was like an ice rink.

Once into the firest however the trails were thankfully easier to ride, less ice, more snow on the ground, and much better grip.
I stuck to the main trails around the forest though, I didn't fancy tacking the icy off-piste trails in the dark.

Anyway, first ride of 2021 survived :D

Re:

Stunning photos of stunning scenery Velofrog

I was in North Uist for a few days last summer, could see Harris from Berneray, I'll have to get over to Harris this year I think, looks like a magical place :D

Looks like a fantastic ride Velofrog, hope you and the family had a nice New Year and Christmas. :)
Stunning photos!
I hope the first Macretro post vaccination ride is yours leading us around your favourite local trails :)

Re:

Cheers lads

I have to say it took a year or two to adjust to life here, but now.... I certainly wouldn’t be in a hurry to go back to the mainland.

‘Magical’ as you say Jim pretty much sums it up, especially down in Harris, the views can completely catch you off guard sometimes.
