Yesterdays ride ….
With a forecast one day of respite between the days of rain and gale force winds over most of the north of Scotland, I managed to get the day off and head south to ride the Jack Taylor round Easter Ross and the Black Isle with Brian.
When I seen the forecast yesterday I asked the boss for a well day to go riding, I wasn't sick, I was too well to come in and needed to ride in the sun before winter closed in once more. Thankfully she understands and approved it.
Weather was fantastic and a familiar route that took in some hills, quiet roads and some off road track round the Cromarty shore made the hours and miles fly by all too quickly. We stopped at a lovely café in Muir of Ord and enjoyed a coffee and a huge wedge of a brie scone for lunch which obviously was needed to keep up the energy levels.
The Super Clubman rode brilliantly as usual, handling everything in its relaxed but superb way and this is it still in it's cobbled together with spares guise. Gave me time to make up my mind regards repainting it and for the foreseeable future I am just going to keep waxing it to keep the rust at bay rather than lose Jacks original paint. I will build it up with the parts I already have set aside for it and set it up properly not just in a temporary way as it is such a nice ride already that it will be so sweet set up right.
A lovely ride in glorious weather finished with a quick coffee at Brians before the couple of hours drive home.

Also the best way to break up a working week.

Bike looks good in it’s spares build, can’t wait to see it in premium build.
Glad to hear you’re not repainting, it’s only original once. Once it’s gone there’s no going back. Don’t mind good or nos components on an old build, but I like a frame to show the life it’s lived.
Looks like you had great weather. Not had a decent ride in weeks, but only one more full week until work swaps to winter schedule. Hoping for a few good weekday rides before winter arrives.

Cheers Clubby, yeah the weather has been really bad the last month or so up here, nearly every weekend it's been raining and really high winds too. Was going a bit stir crazy with only getting short rides round home.
True to form today has been raining all day just about so we were certainly lucky.

Great idea “a well day” never heard of it before, but love the idea of it.
As for the bike, well you know I’m not precious about paint, but that survivor looks so good I’m not sure you’d do it justice having it completely re-done unless you paid a lot more than what Bob Jackson’s charge and take it to a speacialist one man band. If you go down that route (of using a specialist) you might have more joy getting any scratches/rust sorted very locally rather than a total re-spray.
Of course photos sometimes flatter, so only you can judge how bad it is.

Yeah, it might be an Aussie thing, no point lying and saying I'm too sick to come in when really I'm far too well to come in. Need to go riding
It doesn't usually work to be honest.
As for the paint, I do change my mind often, I used to be indecisive but now I'm not so sure
It does look better in the pics I think but it isn't structural and I do like the idea that it is original. The often used line of the patina shows that it has a history doesn't really stand too well with this as when it went into the chicken shed to be forgotten about it was lovely, barely a scratch or chip and bright paintwork but years of chicken dust and dirt soon ate into that. So the rich history of patina is not a history of windswept hardship
It was nice riding it around the hills and roads I have ridden most of my bikes on before and I must say I really liked the ride and the handling was so stable and sure footed but quite relaxed which suites my riding these days.

With regard to paint I share this sentiment 100% (can one share summat 100%????)

I've only ever repainted two bikes, both rattlecanned, but the finish was good and lasted well. One was a present for Panda 3, so that was justifiable. The other was just a runabout (BSA Wayfarer actually) when I was several decades younger :facepalm:

Both my Flaying Scots are heavily patina'd and I'm actually ok with that, although the pale green 1966 one really could do with new paint.

The 1961 black one is odd as it looks like part of the frame is powdercoated but others aren't. Also has some box lining which I like, so I've rattlecanned the now repaired BB area and am actually quite happy with it :xmas-big-grin:

They are both things of beauty just the way they are Mr P
At this piont in time my decision is to keep it patina'd as is for now. Will do my best to protect it for as long as possible.

Out for a few hours this afternoon on the Long Haul Trucker, such a nice day very sunny minimal wind though definitely cold, crisp, but very cold.
Needed to set the Trucker up with it's lights etc ready for the winter, the darker days and evenings, ready for days out as well as the odd commute.
Once I had a few things sorted and a bit of maintenance finished it was nice to just get out and ride, just cruising round the coastline and up to Dunnett Head. No rush just enjoying the nice weather on a quiet Sunday. Trucker as usual was a joy to ride and looking forward to doing a few more winter brevets on it.
Home to a bit of mock up work on the Big Dummy sidecar and trying to sort things with the standard front end, which now won't go back on until spring most likely. The SP Dynamo wheel build will fit both the Dummy and the Trucker so will get some spokes this week and get that done, ready to go.
