Show us what you did today, thread

I'll take the old pedals off you if spd's are your preference. Those fitted are original Shimano plastic pedals not the cheapo ones of today

If you're going to deconstruct old S-A hubs, Tony Hadland's site is good, especially the links to Gill.

Yes, very a useful resource (particularly when you're trying to remember which way the pawl springs go back in!)

Did a very enjoyable 19 miles on the roadster in the sunshine this morning, the first few miles accompanied by my Wife on my road bike (sadly didn't remember to actually take the phone / camera with me, shame as the local scenery was at its best today.)

This gave me the necessary Sturmey Archer inspiration to return to my dismantled hub once the rain came on... I can confirm that a 0.13 (mm) guitar string contorted into the correct shape seems to make a very decent pawl spring. How long it remains springy I don't know - I didn't try to temper it in any way, but it certainly seems to be working very nicely indeed, slightly better than the "proper" one. I'm quite pleased with that, it's not the very most straightforward shape of spring to make - it should be the best sounding hub in Scotland with Rickenbacker pawl springs :)

Re:

0.13mm? That's thinner than a bawhair.

I've used the small springs you get inside retractable pens, cut down to the right length. About the same size as Hope ones.
But realise from what you describe that the spring you made probably isn't like a conventional coil spring in shape.

Depends on yir baws wee man, I once restrung a bass guitar with mine.

Admirable work ajm, I doff ma cap fella :)

Re:

I know, they're incredibly delicate looking - my 0.13 example is noticeably thicker than the originals! And yet, they seem to be capable of working well for decades (given the odd teaspoonful of oil now and then... unlike the poor things in this hub.)

This is the shape of them...

I think I might make a few more and bake them for an hour in the oven or breadmaker - anyone got any experience of this sort of thing? Maybe it's not necessary, or there's a better way?

Re:

When I built my Blue Pig I renovated a pair of Hope/Mavic wheels which included new pawl springs bought from CRC and their still going strong.
