Should a XT M741 headset have a crown race?

Looking at a NOS boxed 1 1/8 threaded M741 headset. The seller says it’s complete as it came but hasn’t got a crown race.

Admittedly I know nothing about them so is this correct?

It should definitely have a crown race.

Is the black bit in the middle of the pic, under the silver bottom cup not the crown race? Looks like it’s just the wrong way up.

I think @JRGSXR is right, looks like its on the bearing.

I think I’d be more concerned at the lack of bearings. Or are they contained in the crown and top races?

They are cartridge bearings on these headsets, top one looks to be wedged on the adjuster nut, bottom wedged on the upside down crown race.

Yeh could be. It’s very hard to tell but it’s a bit I need and can’t find

The more I look at the pic the more I'm convinced it's all there, I think the bearings have just got stuck to the adjuster nut and crown race over the years in the box and would pop apart quite easily with a thin screw driver and not a lot of force.
