Yes, that's why I used the phrase "I think", other people might think differently, even though they'd obviously be wrong.

Shimano has been conservative about things like keeping cup`n cone hubs when everyone else was moving to ball bearings and didn`t bother much with carbon frame parts because i imagine that they don`t need to,

Sticking with Cup and Cone is nothing to do with being conservative, it's because by every measure except cost and tolerance to hamfistedness they are better than cartridge bearings in that application.

And they don't bother much with carbon fibre because to hit their targets for stiffness, durability, cost, weight, repeatabilty, blah blah blah...... Aluminium, steel or Ti is better.

Ummm... my XTR rear mech has a carbon fiber cage, and the brake levers on my road bike are also carbon...
they also make carbon seat posts and handlebars (just look at the Tharsis range).
As others have said, they use it where they think its applicable, not just because.
