Shimano Freehub question.

Hello all,

Could someone tell me if it's possible to put a 8 speed Shimano freehub straight on to my Shimano RX 100 rear hub,it's currently wearing a 7 speed freehub?. Just wondering if it's an easy swap.

Thanks,Dave.

Dave it can be done but it takes a bit of work. The 8spd body is wider so you have to change the axle/axle spacing and redish the wheel. we use to do it a lot back in the day with xt hubs 7 to 8 speed using road 8spd freehubs.
What year is your RX100 some have a washer behind the freehub that you can remove helps with spacing.

Re:

Thanks Carl, not sure of the year but it's a RX100 A550 Hub,it's new and cheap so i took a gamble as i want to build a new set of wheels for my old Raleigh M-Trax 400,the old wheels/hubs are getting a little tired now. I'll take the freehub off tomorrow and see if there is a spacer there.

Dave.

Re:

Forgot to say Carl,i'll also check for a datestamp too although i could'nt see one earlier. Do you know where the letters would be stamped?.

Dave.

Re:

DAve had to callin to work so took quick pic. The washer behind freehub you can loose as long as its a washer not a rubber seal, you will need to put a spacer from the left hand side across to the right as well to accomidate the wider freehub then dish the wheel.

Re:

Thanks Carl for your efforts,i appreciate it. I've now got two rear hubs and one is an 8 speed, trouble is it is a 32 hole and has the dating letters RJ which equates to Oct 93 and i have a 36 hole 7 speed with dating letters OA Jan 90.

Can i strip the two down and make something out of the two, basically need a 36 hole 8 speed rear hub and while i've never done it before i have some mechanical understanding and don't mind learning but don't want to bother if it's not feasible.

Thanks.

In short yes. Shimano hubs are basically all the same design. Use the hub body, seals, bearings and cones of the 36 with the 8 speed spacers and freehub unit and you should be fine. I have even mixed parallax and earlier 'apple core' types and it usually all goes together fine. You might need to swap a few of the smaller spacers about to get the OLN dimension exactly right.

You can even update earlier 'apple core' early 90's hubs to take the later parallax conical rubber seals - the shell diameter is the same. I love my frankenhubs.
