Hi, I’m looking for the funny headset tool for the Shimano 600 , it seems to be hard to find & expensive, can I use normal spanner’s, with some kind of cloth protection, to service the headset , or do I have fork out stupid money to buy a couple of fancy spanner’s. How does anyone service their 600 headset, thanks.

Re:

I use a 32 mm socket (the size that fits the old Shimano square BB tool).

Just checked on an old frame fitted with Shimano 600 headset and works fine.

32mm spanner and care.
Yes, if you look closely at the headset, you'll see that the 'cookie cutter' shape doesn't extent to the very corners of the octagon.

There are still the corner points for a standard 32mm headset spanner, which are the bits that do the work...just be very careful that the spanners don't slip or the points get easily chewed up.

All the best,

With regards to some of the spanners on ebay, I got a set for my Condor last year and the ones that come from Poland I think are repros that the guy is machining up,they have been perfect, didnt cost too much and turned up v quickly, the 'real thing' when they turn up often go for £80
