Shimano 600 5/6 Speed Gear Shift Levers - ISSUES!!

Not sure what they meant as its friction but the lever goes all the way back and loosens the cable enough for it to droop considerably.

It sounds to me like the cable for the FD is not tight enough to begin with. Obviously it will have a bit of slack when the lever is all the way forward, but it should only be a bit, not really drooping. It does sound like the LBS you mention didn't really know what they were doing, I have to say...

I went back to have a look and know I understand what my LBS meant by no click. I think he meant that the left lever goes all the way back which it shouldn't do, so whatever was meant to stop the lever going that far back is not working. Consequently there is a lot of slack which lifts the cable off the cable braze on and because of that it will not return it to its original position. So therefore doesn't work.

I assume I need to look for a new left lever that works...does anyone have a reasonably priced, good condition Shimano 600 sl 6400 left lever for sale please?

Many thanks!

Yes, pretty much any friction shifter would do the job. But I might actually have a left Shimano 600 one for sale - I can take a look in the spares drawer tonight.
That would be great...thank you. If you do find one can you give me an indication of its condition as well if possible? Many thanks!

OK, I think I know what's going on. The lever can be mounted in 4 positions on the square boss. At the same time, it can rotate about 300 degrees on the centre, then it hits a stop. If you get it 90 degrees out the lever will not sit on the stop. Remove the lever, refit it 90 degrees round and try again. Repeat if necessary. I have bought several 'broken' levers over the years because of this which are perfectly good.
