Selling stuff on ebay at astronomical prices

I can't begrudge somebody asking a top price for some bit they've preciously tucked away for a decade.

There are very few parts I'm going to pay top dollar for simply because there is no real need. There are numerous alternatives to almost every part. If you are focused on a particular item in immaculate condition then it is your own inflexibility that is at fault.

At the opposite end of the spectrum if you are patient and open to a variety of options then you can come across some very nice deals on some top quality parts.

Some brands seem to go for more money than they should simply because the brand name is popular. Grafton brakes seem to go for crazy money but I don't think they are so much better than options that often go for a fraction of the price.

These Grafton's were a recently listed number with a BIN of $200. They weren't on my watch list more than a few hours before somebody pulled the trigger. Should they have BIN'd it at $300? Hell yes!

If I put forth the effort to hit garage sales and flea markets I'm sure I could find a better deals than what I can poach off eBay.

Personally, I wouldn't have neck enough to ask over the odds for a part,
similarly I'm more than happy to pay a fair price for something, but I would rather go without than line someone's pockets who was clearly on the make.

I never like to put a bin price as I never know if I'm being too greedy or too generous so I leave it to the auction. Some things I probably lose out on and others I win on, but I quite enjoy the gamble.

I know what you mean by collectors being prepared to pay a high price to complete their project as last year I sold a set of my Dad's nos Ford Escort wheel trims that he'd never used and kept in the loft since 1988 for over £120. If I'd put a bin it would probably have been around £40

Overall MTB parts are cheap, even overpriced ones, my oil pressure and temp gauge on the car cost at least £250 to fit, my brakes £1k+ to buy, tyres £250 twice in 5 years etc etc, suede sparco steering wheel £££££ makes titanium taperwall handlebars seem really cheap!

So yes paying £300 for a NOS M900 crank is no biggie if you want them, you'll be lucky to get a 2011/12 one for that from a shop, so really whoever's held on to the m900's for the best part of 20 years has probably lost money compared to having it in a savings account!

This reminds me of the guy that was selling unleaded petrol for £5.00 a litre in the middle of the last petrol strike,
he knew some people were desperate for fuel and thought he could make a killing put of them.

Personally, I was hoping his garage would catch fire with him in it.
