Actually some folks online are saying the Schwinn headtubes are an oversized 1" and some have put 1 1/8 forks in there... When I feel like it I'll knock out the headset and measure it proper

Yes I would....I reckon there's room....even if you have to get it reamed to size it'll be worth it as it'll open up fork choice hugely....any brake system you want...ahead stem...it's all win win. Be lighter too
And no....I don't have 1" project two forks the ones I have are 1 1/8 chap

There's a bike near me for sale that has all that you need....stem bars and cool straight forks! I'd investigate your headset/headtube situation

Either that or wait for 1 inch to be the new standard when they reinvent the wheel ala gravel bikes

Problem is I like the stem and I like quill stems generally but I have to be honest, as this is a main rider, and I intent to let it giv'r in the woods, I want easily replaceable and bombproofness, and ahead is just that much more solid feeling

Yes I know you like that stem....think I saw a pic of somewhere maybe in your bar.....it's pretty nasty made I wouldn't trust it for anything other than crusing sport!

It does feel pretty cheap to be fair but I just ignored that and had another beer
