so by the same logic, is it that easy to 7 spped on a six speed hub just with the correct shifter?
and if so, does anyone have a matching pair of shimano 7sp thumbers?

I think 7spd freehubs are wider than 6spd,doh!

ah well..... does this mean i cant go from 18 speed to 21 on my 1989 muddy fox pathfinder, and i'll have to upgrade after just a few months to a 21 speed lime green courier comp as i did 17 years ago? lol

According to Sheldon you should be able to put a 7 ring block onto a "standard" 6 speed freehub, see below
