Dave, it's the market that generates the price - this isn't the same as food or fuel where we have to buy it to survive. People will pay what they think it's worth, to them, through a desire for it, not a necessity to buy it.
Ebay is over priced, with people selling items that they think are worth more than they are. Put an item on at 99p and watch the bids roll in, but don't be upset when the price gets to that point where desire taps out. Don't forget that items in our world also follow a fashion, we in turn drive that fashion. Maybe your old Sbike is fetching more now, doesn't mean it's worth more, it's just more desirable. Just take a look at the classic car market right now.
