For reasons I never had a good explanation for EG Bates seemed to be able to lay their hands on all sorts of Raleigh frames, also if push came to shove Raleigh Five Star Dealers could pull a few strings

I've no doubt that's true Shaun. As I understand things, some shops/dealers had more of an influence than others. It's not what you know it's who you know. Still as true today.

Ok, out of curiosity I took a closer look at the serial number as it wasn't too clear. It looked almost like it had been disguised to some degree, certainly compared to the legibility of the '59.5' frame size stamp opposite.

I can see clearly now the paint has gone...

Does that make it a 1980?

I believe so, there or thereabouts anyway. I was reading about Originalshinkicker's SB4059 which is noted as 1980 and that's only a few frames before mine.
