Saracen Eiger Upgraded

bornagainbiker

Retro Newbie
Here is the Saracen Eiger I posted a few months ago now with a few upgrades to make it easier to ride.

Replaced seat post quick release and quick release skewers with very lightweight alloy non quick release ones.

New Ergonomic Grips

Replaced front and rear wheel cones and bearings and re greased.

Replaced worn jockey wheels with Tacx sealed bearing jockeys

Fitted LED front and rear lights, modified tesco and a Cree Q5 AA Torch mounted as my main headlight.

Fitted Continental City Contact tyres to replace the horrible unbranded nobblies that came with it.

Without the lights it now weights 14kg on a digital LCD Scale! :D

All I need now are new pedals - any suggestion I want lightweight and long lasting.

Looks great, another nice old Saracen back on the move, I dont think any early saracen will make it into the weight weenie section but they will last forever

Pedals - Im not really sure about flatties as I run SPD's which I would recommend the M540's and M520's.

Top job

SPD Advice

I dont have any experience of shoe clip type pedals.

Are they worth getting?

I was thinking maybe 520's you mentioned and some Shimano R060 shoes
to go with it.

They might be an investment as I am getting mutch fitter since riding again mainly due to a steep hill near where I live, I used to hate the climb now I look forward to it :D

Plus I have found a new green lane cycle path that leads round a lake and through a wood.

Although the these tyres dont like tree roots and mud they were better than expected!

SPD's are Marmite pedals on here, I cant ride without them now, The very thought of being "unclipped" makes me loose all confidence in the bike. I would say try it out and practice clipping in and unclipping when stationary to get the feel, you can adjust the tension on them easiliy for a tighter or looser lock.

I have recently convinced my brother to ride with them and also my Dad and they both felt the benfit straight away.
