So I took a big hit when out riding the RC300 the other week and blew the fork seals etc. Mechanic had to rebuild them and we had to wait for parts from Pace etc. Finally got them back the other day and he was putting them back on and then.....

Noticed the horrible crack down my headtube....

We can only think it came from same hit as neither of us had noticed it before...

So looks like she is dead - unless anyone knows of a way to fix it?

He's been onto Pace to see what they think...not heard back yet...

Any ideas?

Its fixable but depends on how much head tube there is above the top tube.

Normal repair would involve welding the crack and cryofitting a band around the tube.

lou74 has a Pace frame with the same problem. Pretty sure he has made some investigations into getting it fixed.

Company called Spondon. They make custom aluminium motorbikebike frames and repairs too. IIRC Pace used to use them for repairs BITD, worth getting in touch, they may well be prepared to to the welding and machining required.

commiserations :(

weirdly enough, a while back I was looking at a Pace frame on ebay, that had same split in head tube problem; seller fixed it by having the crack TIG welded - it did not look right and not a way I would recommend.... so you are not alone.

The proper solution would be a new head tube; any else is a bodge IMO.

Strangely enough I was going to post something regarding composites repairs it seems there's a Market for it.yes your pace can be repaired I used to do a lot of stuff with aluminium structures repairing and well the 7000 series here can be fixed .it might just be a saver

Unfortunately this is quite a common Pace frame problem

BITD Pace would have had the frame back, stripped the anodising[tricky with the RC300 carbon seat tube which would need to be removed first] and then Deano would replace the offending part and the frame would be re-anodised. Unfortunately Pace no longer have the ability to do this.

I had a word with Duncan MacDonald last year about possible repairs and he was quite positive but stated that each frame would have to be assessed as an individual and I guess it would be quite costly. I can take it to him if you like for his opinion.

I have seen the head tube cracks bodge welded before which is the cheaper and not very pretty route!
