What's the best way to get away with this? The rings I'm goin to use are race face and I read somewhere, perhaps on the rf site that you can run 9 speed as long as you don't mix and match chain rings, which I'm not going to. So what chain would I use? 10 speed or 9? Anything else I should consider?

Re:

i think 10 speed ringed cranks are ok with 9 speed chains an rear 9speed cogs u cant use a 10 speed chain though only a 9speed

Good to know. What would be better, I mean for me a 9 speed chain would be best as I have one or two, but which would technically be better?

a good 9 speed chain is stronger then a 10 speed
there fatter chains

There's unlikely to be any significant difference between the two in use.
9 speed chain on a 10 speed chain set *might* rub in slightly more ratios than a 9 speed chain set/chain. Saying that, I've run 9/10 hybrid drivetrains on several bikes and never noticed.

Stronger/weaker is not so easy to judge, side plates are thinner, but pins, plates and rollers are made from a different grade of material. So they might be better in wear, but have poor fracture strength etc etc.

Unless you know exactly which grades and how they've been heat treated etc. You've got no real idea. And every manufacturer will be slightly different.

Re:

Use a 9 speed chain with a 9 speed cassette for best results. Whether the chainrings are 9 or 10 speed makes absolutely no difference.

Thanks. I'll probably stick with a 9 speed chain initially and see how that works. I think i read that the inner diameter of the links are the same on both 9 and 10 speed chains so it's the plates that are thinner as you say.

I think i already know the answer to this but asking again anyway. I'm struggling to find an sram xo front mech that is both top direct mount (or even 32mm in size) for 3x9 or 3x10 at logical money. Are the 2x10 front mechs reengineered that much that they won't work? I'm sure the answer is yes they have been, but really??
