Yes, i often faff around with the layout, even mix spring with elastomer.
For me, i dont seek the ideal performance with damp/rebound and that blah...rather just try achieve something that stops my fillings getting knocked out at every rumble in terrain, and hold a 16 stone rider.
And at £10 or less per time, i dont get buyers regret, or have to send the forks away to a specialist.
